THE WHAT? The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has expanded its global renewable energy portfolio by recently completing an on-site solar array installation at its new fill and assembly manufacturing facility, Hillmount, in Markham, Ontario.

THE DETAILS Hillmount was designed with a variety of green building practices, including windows fitted with glass that prevents injury to birds, measures to reduce pollution from construction, green parking spaces for hybrid and electric vehicles, and indoor and outdoor water efficiency.

According to the company, “The sustainable features are a part of ELC’s broader efforts to drive strategic initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint, integrate environmentally responsible practices and invest in innovative technology through its global manufacturing and distribution network around the world.”

The Hillmount array installation will produce 730 MWh of solar electricity annually from approximately 1,600 panels and generate 10% of the estimated Hillmount plant demand — the equivalent of yearly electricity for 84 homes.

On a cloudless, sunny day, the solar array can generate approximately 50% of the real-time plant demand.

THE WHY? The completed installation is said to be an ‘important milestone in its continuous mission to focus on long-term sustainable growth.’

The newly energized solar installation will support progress toward ELC’s science-based targets (SBTs) and will become the the company’s first Canadian facility to use on-site solar power.
