THE WHAT? US Senator Maggie Hassan has written to Tampon manufacturers to encourage them to address the supply shortages of products on shelves.

THE DETAILS According to Bloomberg, US Senator Maggie Hassan wrote to manufacturers Procter & Gamble, Edgewell Personal Care co, Johnson & Johnson and Kimberly-Clark to enquire into their plans to address the proposed shortages and third party price gouging. 

The letter stated that the companies should take ‘immediate action to increase the tampon supply and end unnecessary price increases. Access to menstrual products should be treated like every other essential good.”

THE WHY? J&J responded stating it does not make tampons in the U.S., while P&G, which has a near 50 percent market share in U.S. menstrual-care supplies, said it is “working hard to ramp up production to meet the increased demand for our products.”

Edgewell blamed an increase in COVID-19 Omicron variant for any lowered inventory. 

It said, “We have been operating our manufacturing facilities around the clock to build back inventory and anticipate returning to normal levels in the coming weeks.”
