THE WHAT? Procter & Gamble has announced a major expansion of its environmental sustainability efforts to include restoring water to critically water-stressed areas around the world.
THE DETAILS The initiative includes a global portfolio of water restoration projects spanning a range of solutions to protect ecosystems, replenish groundwater reserves and reducing the amount of water diverted from essential bodies of the precious resource and improving water quality.
P&G has added two goals to its sustainability program: restoring more water than is consumed at its manufacturing sites in 18 water-stressed areas around the world; and restoring more water than is consumed during use of P&G products in the high water-stressed areas of Los Angeles and Mexico City.
THE WHY? With almost one-third of people around the world experiencing water scarcity, a number that is expected to double by 2025, and water critical to both manufacturing and the end-use of the majority of Procter & Gamble’s products, the US FMCG manufacturer has a vested interest in securing a stable supply.
Virginie Helias, Chief Sustainability Officer, commented, “Creating a ripple effect toward a water positive future requires widespread solutions – from manufacturing and product innovations that improve consumers’ lives in a sustainable way, to restoring water for nature, wildlife, and communities. While there will always be more to learn, P&G is dedicated to doing our part to care for our planet, our shared home.”
