THE WHAT? L’Oréal has become the latest cosmetics company to face a class action lawsuit over its use of biometric identifiers via a try-on tool featured on its website, according to a report published by Legal Newsline.

THE DETAILS The French beauty giant could be called to defend its website widget in the state of Illinois, where the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), prohibits the collection of biometric data such as eye scans, finger prints or voice prints without consent.

THE WHY? The suit alleges that L’Oréal’s virtual try-on tool doesn’t inform users that it is capturing or collecting facial geometry, or obtain written consent before doing so.
