THE WHAT? The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, FDA and FBI have announced that Gabriel Letizia has been sentenced to 60 months in jail for defrauding customers of his consumer testing firm and jeopardising the safety of millions of consumers.
THE DETAILS Letizia, as owner and executive director of Ama Laboratories, purported to test the safety and efficacy of cosmetics, sunscreens and other products on specified numbers of volunteers in order to substantiate product claims. However, the products were tested on materially lower numbers and falsified data.
THE WHY? Ama Laboratories was found to have falsified test results which included supressing adverse reactions and deviating from testing protocols, endangering consumers in the name of greed.
